This carved Emu eggshell is titled “Roses through the Windowpane”. The eggshell was carved using a NSK Presto II air driven handpiece, with burrs measuring 1/16th inches in diameter. I primarily used diamond burrs for the relief carving portion (the shape being several size balls, footballs and wheel) and switched to a straight carbide for the cut-outs. For the lay-out portion, I used thin washi tape to get the correct proportions, and then clear transfer sticker paper for the roses. The eggshell stand is Sapele wood and finished with beeswax. I turned the stand on a wood lathe from a 4x4x4 inch block. The inspiration for this pattern came to my mind after reading the book, “The Secret Garden”, by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Roses hold special meaning in the book, and the window shapes are based on a Tudor style diamond lattice window. I don’t know that any special techniques were used, except to be careful and gentle with the piece.
nes I have made up in my mind.
