This egg was written for "Pysanky for Ukraine" Day, and so contains several symbols related to Ukraine. There are two intricate bands of original design, one over the top and one over the bottom of the egg, running in contrary directions, each ending in a fan of prayer shawls depicting wheat, the staple crop of Ukraine, symbolizing prosperity and hope for a good harvest. The band contains 8-pointed stars with "jewels" inside, which represent Christ as the treasure of Ukrainian culture and it's source of hope.
Next to the fans are groups of pussy willows, which traditionally represent Palm Sunday in Ukraine. These were intended to mean the triumph of good over evil, and the hope for a victory after the "Passion" through which Ukraine is currently passing. These pussy willows are done in great detail, even to being two-toned white and grey and "fuzzy". I am including a detail photo of the pussy willows.
The egg was mainly done using traditional pysanky wax-resist techniques, but some other techniques were also employed. There is shading on the "jewels" to make them appear to have highlights, and there is some etching, so that the primary lines are raised somewhat. A scratch tool was used to make the pussy willows appear "fuzzy" and to give them the progression from grey near the bottom to white on top.
